In the late 1970s, when obtaining a Nigerian passport required an arduous trip to Lagos; an impossible feat for a village boy with limited means; Chief F. U. Mbakogu intervened with a heart of gold. Through his generosity and influence, he secured my very first passport and, with it, opened the door to my American dream. His profound gesture became the guiding hand that transformed hope into destiny.

With His Royal Highness, Igwe Emmanuel I. Umeononankume, Obi Akalabo I of Amesi, and his gracious wife, whose blessing and honor in 2006 bestowed upon me the prestigious chieftaincy title—an enduring recognition that forever binds me to the heritage of my people.
Engr. Godwin Ubanyionwu on the occasion of his chieftaincy coronation in 2006, conferred with honor by His Royal Highness, Igwe Emmanuel I. Umeononankume, Obi Akalabo I of Amesi—the people’s Igwe, a steadfast pillar of honor and integrity. A day that forever bound me to the heritage and destiny of my homeland.
His Royal Highness, Igwe Paul Egbuachor (Obinwanne), Igwe Akalabo II of Amesi—an era marked by dignity, calm authority, and quiet peace. Though his tenure was brief, his reign was harmonious and stabilizing, beginning with his coronation on 23 December 2015 and concluding in November 2020. In those years, he embodied royal restraint and communal balance, leaving behind a legacy defined not by length, but by the serenity and order with which he served his people.
In his youthful radiance, H.R.M. Igwe Ambassador Dr. Ezedioramma Aniagu stands crowned in both legacy and purpose. It was during this remarkable chapter of his life that he intervened with unparalleled grace to secure my U.S. visa—a gesture without which my American dream might have met a premature end. His extraordinary commitment was the very force that turned the cogs of destiny, setting in motion the journey that brought me to America.

The Noble Hand That Secured My Journey to the United States. It was H.R.M. Igwe Ambassador Dr. Ezedioramma Aniagu who made my American dream possible by securing my U.S. visa — an act of grace and destiny. Without his intervention, the path that shaped my life and legacy might never have unfolded. He remains the central figure in my story and a quintessential presence in my memoir.

This simple yet powerful card carried uncommon influence. When presented, it opened doors that were otherwise closed — granting access to healthcare providers for yellow fever inoculations, expediting tax clearance, and persuading bank managers to issue travelers’ checks. It symbolized prestige, trust, and the invisible hand that guided my passage from Igboland to America.
In December 2005, at Ihe in Awgu L.G.A., I, Ichie (Engr.) Godwin Ubanyionwu — Ugochinyere 1 of Amesi — stood with H.R.M. Igwe Ambassador Dr. Ezedioramma Aniagu, accompanied by my entire family, to pay homage for his noble role in securing my visa to America: honoring the guiding hand that opened the gate to my American journey and illuminated the path of my life’s story.
Mr. J. C. Mapel — the gracious humanitarian in whose home I found shelter at No. 5 Aninwede Street, Ogui New Layout, Enugu, during my determined pursuit of the U.S. visa. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on my journey to America.

We rejoice in the blessing of his long and fruitful journey; having attained the golden age of ninety-seven years and counting; thus, offering profound thanksgiving to God for a life marked by faith, endurance, and enduring legacy.

That chapter of America’s history exposed a nation momentarily stripped of its soul, where cruelty was institutionalized and moral depravity sat perilously close to the helm of leadership.
As Ichie (Engr.) Godwin Ubanyionwu, P.E. (Ugochinyere 1 of Amesi) and Lolo Adaeze Francisca Ubanyionwu peregrinated through the museum’s many levels, from the ground floor upward, the weight of history became inescapable. The trauma and anguish endured by men and women held against their will clung to the air, refusing release. Their silenced voices echoed vicariously in my mind; pleas for mercy, justice, and remembrance, affirming the timeless truth that “the evil that men do lives after them.”
Each level of the museum bears solemn witness to the brutality and savagery that marked specific years of recorded atrocities. A close, unflinching reading of the written texts reveals, with piercing clarity, the depth of pain inflicted upon enslaved people, suffering without voice, refuge, or avenue for reprieve.
