A Glimpse of Beginnings: Ichie (Engr.) Godwin Ubanyionwu, P.E., in My Earliest Days — The Seed of Dreams, Hope, and a Journey That Shaped the Life I Know Today
The boy who dreamed of America—born in Jos, on the rocky heights of Nigeria’s Plateau State, yet raised in the ancestral village of Amesi by the hand of circumstance and the storms of the Nigerian Civil War. In this tender beginning, no one could have imagined the vast horizons ahead: that this child, carried between war and peace, would one day cross oceans and build highways of hope from Igboland to Texas.
In the quiet rusticity of Igboland, simplicity met grace. Here stands Ichie Ugochinyere, flanked by Francisca Adaeze — the embodiment of elegance and warmth whose gentle spirit captured my heart and inspired a lifetime union.

During my sojourn to Washington, D.C., I shared a delightful game of pool with my wife, Lolo Adaeze, and our daughter, Dr. Jessica Ijeoma. The scene unfolded around a classic billiard table—fifteen colorful balls, one white cue ball, and a cue stick resting lightly on the red felt, framed by pockets at each corner and midway along the sides. The soft glow of bar lights lent the room an inviting warmth. Now and then, I would attempt an acrobatic flourish—flipping the cue stick over my back for a bold strike aimed straight at the pocket—an exhibition of doubtful authenticity, meant only to stir laughter. It was an atmosphere filled with fun, conviviality, and the gentle harmony of shared joy.
My trip to Washington, D.C. brought me into the felicitous embrace of a foosball table, where my wife, Dr. Jessica and I took turns in foosball competition. We found ourselves caught in a spirited flurry of play—filled with laughter, quick reflexes, and boundless excitement. “Quick… hurry!” Lolo exclaimed time and again, her voice brimming with that exquisite thrill one brings to fleeting, joy-laden moments. It was more than a game; it was a shared burst of vitality—a lighthearted contest that lifted the spirit and nourished the soul.

Sailing the Caribbean – A Journey of Rest and Renewal
The photo captures the majestic cruise ship that carried Ichie Ugochinyere and Lolo Adaeze across the shimmering waters of the Caribbean Sea, part of the vast Atlantic Ocean. Departing from Miami, their voyage embraced the sunlit shores of Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Cozumel, Mexico—a long-overdue respite and celebration of life’s quiet rewards.
It was more than a voyage; it was a moment to exhale—to reflect, reconnect, and give thanks for the grace of rest after seasons of labor and purpose.
Welcoming signposts of the Cayman Islands and Cozumel, Mexico—cherished stops along the voyage as Ichie Ugochinyere and Lolo Adaeze gracefully navigated the turquoise expanse of the Caribbean Sea, savoring moments of serenity and renewal beneath the boundless sky.
In these photos, Ichie Ugochinyere and Lolo Adaeze stand entranced by the vast, endless sea—a boundless blue that whispers of unity and beckons the soul to drift within the warm embrace of its oneness.
In these photos taken in Cozumel, Mexico, Ichie Ugochinyere and Lolo Adaeze stand beneath a coral-shaped canopy—an artistic reminder of nature’s delicate balance and the call to protect the marine ecosystem. At the center stands the statue of Benito Juárez, whose enduring legacy of reform and defense of civil rights laid the foundation for a modern, democratic Mexico.
In these photos taken in Cozumel, Mexico, Ichie Ugochinyere and Lolo Adaeze leisurely peregrinate through beckoning gift shops, pausing to savor the island’s finest high-shelf organic tequila—its smooth, authentic flavor lingering gently on the palate like a toast to life’s simple pleasures.
Lolo and I were utterly mesmerized by our brief residence aboard the cruise ship! What an avant-garde invention by man! The sheer ingenuity of human creation spoke volumes of divine inspiration. "The world is filled with the footprints of God. Even a man who denies God acknowledges His presence by the sheer force of intellect and reasoning power with which he negates the Creator. When we look to heaven for answers, it is an acknowledgment that man’s understanding of everything that comes within his purview is circumscribed by the existence of God."
Here, adrift upon the tranquil Caribbean Sea, we found ourselves in the ship’s staterooms; oblivious to the world beyond our cabin walls. It was as though we had become amphibious beings, suspended between two realms: sharing the same ecosystem with the marine species below, yet tethered by spirit to the infinite horizon. The waves whispered their eternal hymn, and we, buoyed by the tender rhythm of the ocean, felt drawn toward that vast, endless sea of oneness that calls lovers to swim in the warm waters of mutual affection and divine grace.
What a resplendent and well-deserved respite this was; a voyage of reflection, renewal, and thanksgiving. For all these, we give unreserved glory to God.
The photograph features, from left, Mrs. Ifeoma Nzekwe, BSN, RN; at the center, Engr. John Nzekwe, Omereoha I of Amankwo Oghe, alongside Ichie (Engr.) Ugochinyere Godwin Ubanyionwu; and at the right, Lolo Adaeze Ubanyionwu.
A cherished family friendship binds us together, and in this moment Mrs. Ifeoma Nzekwe and Engr. John Nzekwe extend their gracious goodwill and heartfelt congratulations on the successful publication of The Boy Who Dreamed of America.

Their story, like mine, is etched with struggle, resilience, reinvention, and the unyielding pursuit of a better tomorrow. In their grace and bearing, one sees the quiet triumphs that echo the deeper themes of The Boy Who Dreamed of America: the courage to begin again, the will to endure, and the hope that lights every journey toward the new world.
